A typical implementation of a 4-bit counter consists of two D flip-flops (0123 1132) where the 01 and 12 represent the most significant bits of the count, the 21 and 31 represent the least significant bits of the count, and the output represents the effective count (the result of the AND operation of the counters) in binary. In a synchronous configuration the counter and the synchronizing clock are connected to all the flip-flops.
Input for synchronous counter
There are different input values for the synchronous counter:
Scale inputs. A scale input allows you to scale the output of the counter.
Delay inputs. A delay input controls the delay between the inputs of the D flip-flops.
Reset inputs. If reset is enabled, then the circuit is reset to the initial count and all the input signals are set to zero.
Controllable inputs. There are several controllable input signals that you can use to vary the inputs of the D flip-flops: the enable signal that controls the D flip-flops, the enable signal that controls the OR gates, and the clock signal that controls the D flip-flops.
Clock input
The counter circuit contains a single clock signal that is used to control all the flip-flops. The clock signal is connected to all the flip-flops and the counter circuit is connected to the clock input of the D flip-flops. When the clock is high, the flip-flops are switched on. When the clock is low, the flip-flops are switched off.
Flip-flop
The flip-flops in the synchronous counter are defined by the input and output ports and the logic gates that connect the flip-flop’s input and output ports. The following is a list of the most important flip-flop’s port definitions:
